Meet ASKA - Creating a Fairy Tale
Where are you from?
I’m from Russia. I was born in Yakutsk, but I have been living in Saint Petersburg for 10 years now.
Describe your signature design style in five words.
Simplicity, femininity, patterns, and wearable art.
Do you thrive off of spontaneity or careful planning?
I’m trying to plan carefully but all my plans are spontaneous when inspiration strikes.
How do you deal with creative blocks?
I crush them like Jean Claude Van Damme ;) Just kidding, I haven’t faced any real creative blocks yet.
Are you a romantic person?
Yes! To be honest, I don’t believe non-romantic people truly exist :)
Do you prioritize aesthetics or functionality?
In my work – aesthetics of course, but I think it depends on style. I am convinced that sportswear and protective clothing should be primarily functional.
Are your designs connected with or inspired by your heritage?
There's a huge cultural heritage as I was born in Yakutsk – capital of the largest republic in Russia, Sakha - with its amazing nature, rich cultural traditions and ethnical diversity. I’m confident my life in such a place has influenced my designs, but there is no direct connection. Nevertheless, I keep this theme as my inspiration in the nearest future ;)
Are art and commercialization irreconcilable?
For me it’s still difficult to find the middle ground between art and commercialization, but I have finally discovered one thing - if you dream to become a fashion designer, art should become your priority, otherwise all your work loses its meaning. I think it applies to all creative professions.
Did you undergo a formal design education?
Yes and it gave me a lot, but I’m still hungry for knowledge, and I like to evolve by looking at streetwear and studying the fashion history in depth.
What first made you passionate about fashion?
One of Christian Dior’s fashion shows by John Galliano. It was so charming, like a fairytale! That moment I realized, I want to live in such a fairytale, so that’s why I became a fashion designer. Of course, my attitude to fashion has changed over time, but one thing remains the same - the desire to create a fairy tale for my clients and for myself.
Do you work better alone or in a team?
Alone and that’s a problem sometimes, because I am very protective of my art and work. Nevertheless, I have people who help me with advice, as well as my two irreplaceable seamstresses who help me to create beauty.
If you could travel anywhere tomorrow, where would you go?
If you could have any superpower, what would it be?
