Meet Ganor Dominic - Surreal and Avant-Garde
Renowned footwear label Ganor Dominic is named for the father of brand director Kate and creative designer Anna. As the winner of the National Footwear Design Student of the Year Award at the prestigious London College of Fashion, Anna was able to use her graduate collection as the starting point for the brand in 2015.
An obsession with “shoes as art” informs every collection, and influences range from Greek deities to surrealist sculptures to avant-garde couturiers. Ganor Dominic’s innovative faces, which can be sculpted in 3D, embossed, laser cut, or printed, are a signature motif. Totally unique and utterly iconic, Ganor Dominic’s feminine yet bold footwear is crafted by hand in Italy with locally sourced materials. The label is beloved by trendsetters worldwide, with a fan base ranging from Lady Gaga to the woman next door.
What's your name?
Describe your signature design style in five words.
Artistic, surreal, avant-garde, sculptural, with a face. ;)
What's your biggest source of inspiration?
Art & surrealism & philosophy.
Do you think true innovation in fashion is still possible?
Yes, if it’s a mix of fashion & technology.
What role does the commercial aspect play for you? Does it limit your creativity?
On one hand it kills creativity, but on the other - it challenges and thus develops it.
What other art forms inspire your collections?
Do you prefer to follow or subvert trends?
Subvert, destroy, ignore! Anything but follow.
Do you thrive off of spontaneity or careful planning?
Spontaneity in concept creation, planning in developing a range.
How do you deal with creative blocks?
Like all normal designers: depression - apathy - stroke of inspiration - design.
Are you a romantic person?
Do you prioritize aesthetics or functionality?
Both - good design can’t lack one or the other.
How do you think the fashion industry is going to change as automation takes over?
Depends on how far in the future we are looking. In about 30 years, I believe almost all garments will be a synergy of sportswear and high tech.
Which fashion designer do you have the most respect for?
Alber Elbaz - I admire him as a person first of all and then as a designer.
Are your designs connected with or inspired by your heritage?
Heritage as a personal experience & knowledge, yes.
Are art and commercialization irreconcilable?
They are. People pay money for art.
What places have the worst-dressed people?
Nudist beaches. :)
Did you undergo a formal design education?
Yes, footwear design at London College of Fashion.
Do you think collaborations between companies and designers are cash plays or real attempts at innovation?
Collaborations are key to innovation & progress.
Do you gravitate more toward designing for men or women?
For aliens who are human. ;) We’re launching a collection for men soon.
What first made you passionate about fashion?
I have always been passionate for art, especially surrealism, not really fashion.
Once you’ve mastered a certain style, is it difficult to continue evolving it?
Not really, there’s always a space for fantasy.
If you had to invent a new color, what would it look like and what would you call it?
Perhaps in would look like liquid metal. I’d call it alien.
Do you work better alone or on a team?
Design - alone. All other aspects - on a team.
If you could travel anywhere tomorrow, where would you go?
What is your favorite film?
Do you have any rituals when starting a new design?
Depression - apathy - stroke of inspiration - design. ;)
What is your favorite thing to do outside of fashion?
You’ve received an elephant. You can’t give it away or sell it. What would you do with it?
Use it as transport.
What is your favorite food?
What's your favorite month or season?
If you could collaborate with anyone in the world on a new collection, who would it be?
What is your spirit animal?
What’s the first thing you do when you wake up?
What is one thing you can’t live without?
If you could have any superpower, what would it be?
Understand & speak every language including dog language.
