Meet Gunta Pudiste - Tailor to the Swedish Royal Family
What's your name?
My name is Gunta Pudiste and I am owner and designer at Pudist Fashion.
Where are you from?
I'm from Riga, Latvia.
Describe your signature design style in five words.
I like classic style and most of my clients prefer that too. But now and then I give it a go - my nature inspired lines, flows, materials have designs to celebrate.
What's your biggest source of inspiration?
It's always been and will be nature.
Do you think true innovation in fashion is still possible?
I believe the new generation is there to bring it on.
What role does the commercial aspect play for you? Does it limit your creativity?
Most definitely, it does. My ideas and creative potential are limited, I rely on my financial freedom and therefore don't have enough resources to be able to use my whole imagination. There's much more than the eye can see.
What other art forms inspire your collections?
Paintings. Especially, Latvian paintings.
Do you prefer to follow or subvert trends?
I follow trends but stay true to the classics.
Are you a romantic person?
Very much so.
Do you prioritize aesthetics or functionality?
Yes, functionality comes first.
Which fashion designer do you have the most respect for?
Valentino, most absolutely.
Did you undergo a formal design education?
Yes, I graduated from a design school and then for many years worked as a designer for someone else's company until I started my own business.
Do you think collaborations between companies and designers are cash plays or real attempts at innovation?
I think collaborations are great! I have worked with and mentored many Norwegian and Swedish start up designers, helping to make their first collections. They are incredible innovation bombs.
Do you work better alone or on a team?
Inspiration comes to me on my own, technical solutions are found with my team.
What is your favorite film?
"Gone with the wind." Scarlet is my person.
Do you have any rituals when starting a new design?
Yes, it is a long, long walk along the Baltic beach.
What is your favorite thing to do outside of fashion?
Gardening and traveling. That brings peace to my mind.
What is your favorite food?
Salads, in any combination - veggies, fruits, pasta, meat, etc.
What's your favorite month or season?
Most definitely, it is summer - the heat, flowers, nature is blooming, nourishing.
What’s the first thing you do when you wake up?
Have a cup of coffee in my garden.
What is one thing you can’t live without?
If you could have any superpower, what would it be?
I would want to fly. Feel the freedom. Have a distant look at things.
