Meet JC Pajares - Textile Master
Spanish designer Juan Carlos Pajares is the darling of fashion IT girls, models and trendsetters around the world. He specializes in the space where fashion meets fantasy, with his preference for pattern mixing, bright colors and ostrich feathers defining his collections.
Where are you from?
I'm from a small village near Madrid, Spain.
Describe your signature design style in five words.
Colorful, high quality, handmade, commercial, versatile.
What's your biggest source of inspiration?
Art, architecture, and street style!
Do you think true innovation in fashion is still possible?
Yes, but only in the world of textiles.
What role does the commercial aspect play for you? Does it limit your creativity?
It doesn't limit my creativity! Clothing is for real people, so I design with real life in mind.
What other art forms inspire your collections?
Mainly artisanal and fine art.
Do you thrive off of spontaneity or careful planning?
If I could, I'd plan everything, but it’s impossible. While my work often takes careful planning, when it comes to my life, everything is spontaneous!
Do you prioritize aesthetics or functionality?
I definitely consider both - 60% aesthetics, 40% functionality.
Do you think collaborations between companies and designers are cash plays or real attempts at innovation?
I think the relationship is 50-50. Companies constantly need new sources of creativity, which designers provide, but at the same time, designers need to collaborate with companies in order to bring their pieces to market.
What first made you passionate about fashion?
The fashion ads and editorials that I saw when I was a child!
Once you’ve mastered a certain style, is it difficult to continue evolving it?
No, because I design what I want in the moment... I don’t think in terms of having concrete styles.
Do you work better alone or on a team?
When it comes to designing my collections, I work better alone. For other everyday things, I prefer working with my team.
If you could travel anywhere tomorrow, where would you go?
I'd go to Bali or Seoul!
What is your favorite film?
It's hard to pick just one, but I love Disney!
Do you have any rituals when starting a new design?
I research new textiles, look through patterns from other collections, and then build a mental image of street style models and clients wearing our new concept garments.
What's your favorite month or season?
If you could collaborate with anyone in the world on a new collection, who would it be?
I'd collab with MSGM!
What is one thing you can’t live without?
If you could have any superpower, what would it be?
The power to stop time.
